dJodo Shinto Muso Ryu

Jodo Shinto Muso Ryu contains 12 basic techniques (Kihon) and 64 katas, where the attacker uses a sword (odachi, bokken) or a short sword (kodachi). The defender uses a wooden stick (jo).

The basic techniques comprise all essential movements necessary for the katas. They can be practiced alone or with a partner. The katas are divided into several sets: Omote, Chudan, Ran'ai, Kage, Samidare, Gohon no Midare und Okuden. Each of these sets has its own rhythm – basic and clear, wild and dynamic, slow and stately.

In addition, there are further katas for the short stick (tanjo) and twelve katas for swords only. Very advanced practitioners also use the chain sickle (Kusarigama) as well as the sword breaker (Jutte).

We are supported by the European Jodo Federation www.fej.ch. Jean-Pierre Pahu from Geneva teaches a weekend seminar in Basel several times a year. He has been practicing Jodo since 1987 and is an official instructor of Jodo Shinto Muso Ryu. The seminars are a chance to learn more about Jodo.

The Jodo practice takes place on Mondays and Thursdays from 16:45 till 18:15.

Additionally, in summer on Tuesdays 18:30 - 20:00 practice open to all with jo and bokken in Kannenfeldpark.
